Interesting must-read Huffington Post article promoted from www.IMEI.TEL    page, describes background and shady markets of stolen Smartphones in USA .

Could such grey markets be potentially undercut by potential of all-numeric TELs towards one 's smartphone ID DIY control , since now protective registration of original owner's all numeric 16digit IMEI is available over dot TEL ?

After you invented the IMEI idea for .tel, you only need to find a way to make it famous by showing it on popular places.

Thanks , on one hand I did not "invented" , all numeric dot tel release is from TELnic, IMEI was supported by GSMA, and www.IMEI.TEL was there.

On the other hand I reckon,  it is a very interesting immediate usecase (in matter of market size and monetisation scale) that I can see, among all the usecases promoted (?) by TELnic.

Indeed the mobile phone market still needs deeply some solution in relation to value already leaking from regular hands to illegal hands, with sometimes innocent victims being stolen and others being fooled by buying back the stolen device without knowing it to make it short.

The good things here compared to other usecase other forumers might/should advocate on this forum, is that there is already some distinctive needs, some heavy money value circulating, and some stake holders in place spending money, or extracting revenues ( millions of primary end users, millions of "second" hand users, authorities tracing mobiles, mobile cover insurance companies seeing mobile crime costs exploding, operators facing CRM , phone manufacturers shipping new phones, black market traders, thousands of individual thieves, etc etc ) in whatever order depending on which perspective you look from... .

But the good news are that there are some money facts and metrics already on the table, it is not some wishful thinking about a new market/usage .

The truth is however nobody can circumvent that who makes the money should push first, because at the end of the day, it does make sense for him much better than to the others to spent efforts and energy to have the ecosystem go some interesting way (for him).

If I remember well TELnic is on top of the food chain, because it provides somewhere the basic food ingredients as dot TEL,  and makes the money by selling  dot TELs to Registrars (or indirectly to Service Providers who ever they are (TLN, etc))

All other stakeholders in IMEI usecase could start thinking to move if they are suggested so with (market / marketing) directions about where is the food, what kind of food, how to cook,  , and can calculate themselves (of course better even when helped , if not hungry enough) where they could earn their living better compared to present situation.

Again, the top guys who should organise and evangelize this and facilitate these usecases whatever such usecases are, are at the Registry Level , let us not escape from that.

Interestingly here , even if the final mass target is Joe public , you already have other stakeholders (not being Registrars) possibly interested to move if they are addressed (also depending who approaches them to educate them with what kind of incentive), as typicallly ....  banks and insurance companies  ( e.g.  http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/cheap-mobile-phone-insurance ) covering stolen or missing Smartphones against monthly fees ,and puzzled by explosion of illegal trading of such stolen phones,  and by collateral replacement costs increasing, a painful stone in their shoe... just to take another angle of vision that could benefit from some push over universal registry of IMEI over TEL.


So yes it is definitevely interesting when there is some public communication from worldwide known Huffington Post who dig into some aspects of this market , paving some ways to more global understanding of dimensions of such usecase, if a dot TEL can fit as a universal technical solution for it (which seems at least very possible ).

However , possible does not mean it will happen, as it is still the Registry 's role as the architect to draw plans, offer coupons for filling tanks up with enough fuel, or for packaged journey, to raise whatever smart Tolls, and have more and more roads or highways being constructed for larger acknowledgments of whatever usecase of all numeric Tel,  whether IMEI, or not IMEI.

This forum, previous one or next one, cannot do it itself or succeed to get enough traction , when , whoever the stakeholder is, his first move would be to look at who originates the food/ingredients ( typically looking at the Registy ) to see what he is doing and deduct from that his own potential action in hiw own hunting area among the food chain.

I am afraid all this is a bit long, and tomorrow is already the opening of all numeric, so we can just deduct easily ... what will not so immediately happen in the absence of central communication by the registry , on all known long number usecases  ;+)
