Just discovered:
Telnic Limited (http://telnic.org), the Registry Operator for the communications-focused .tel top level domain (TLD), today announced that all-numeric .tel domain strings of eight digits or longer will be made available in October

Not sure over vending refreshed hype will result in anything positive.

- On one hand, it is a minor event, just the de-freezing of some range of TELs which were blocked
- On the other hand, these were blocked from specific discussions (ENUM background & context in early age of VOIP) which from virtual at that time, have drowned since by themselves.
Therefore re speculating on false grounded ideas , usages, and usecases, could be dangerous.

From the howver nicely pictured example , typing NESTLE .TEL is not a fact, it is an still unproved hypothesis.
Therefore now reaching 41-21-21111 .TEL is a double hypothesis that is very very unlikely to happen.  ( 0,000001 %    x   0,01 %  ? )
It may happen only for some specifically marketed number/reasons (not for Joe public phone number if there is no back end services attached from infrastructure to 41-21-21111 .TEL ) , and indeed possibly therefore not for ... phone numbers.

Of course it is easier for TELnic not to make any strategic comment or marketing efforts over "all numeric long domain strings" new availability.
However , it would be more reasonnable business wise due to the specificity of TEL,  to depict REASONNABLY with potential usecases (no legends nor hype again) what usages could be brought in or build.

Eventually more potential are to be found in the Internet of Things , DIY home automation with Raspberry Pi type of applications,  than in trying to revamp numeric phone numbers usage without reasonnable added value , while simultaneously bumping into the incumbant operators telecom infrastructures without finding out a role or a benefit for them  ...

So...  bringing again real usecases with added value should be the way, ... or the highway...

It just sounds like enhanced caller ID, which most phones support and if you're using a land line phone with a bigger screen as some do video then I'd expect you call a number and the phone adds on the end .tel, and if it exists and the same phone number is listed with some verification then the details are pulled into the phones screen window via DNS to provide extra links.

For instance you want to call a shop about an order, before you click call you type in the phone number and it checks by adding the .tel at the end and verifies the shop owns that tel, you then could be navigating a directory of sub departments to get a more refined number, or even use app links that work with your type of phone because the phone lists those app links when it decides what data to pull out via DNS, so you phone is unique as most mobiles are but its a landline one and the shop knows your phone is listed to your account so it becomes a key that allows you to reorder or pick an item without going though customer services rubbish, they just give you a quick call back and ask you to enter a pin code by phone or you do it via the menu app system.

Beep beep Beep Beep, ok thats you order sent because they have your details on file or just take the money from your phone bill. Anyway they should be unlocked and are necessary as customers know how to dial numbers and like with Second Life where "resident" accounts aka basic accounts are hidden in the client, so should the phone or device just add .tel to the end of the number to do the DNS lookup.

If they did it via trawling the whole tel database to check what phone number was listed to what tel so it can pull data it would not be quick or efficient and would cost a fortune, just adding .tel at the end is much simpler for any device to do a lookup when customers know phone numbers but dont have the ability to type letters to dial a tel because telcos dont want to change things that way.

Are you suggesting that VANITY numbers are more valuable than anonymous number ?
http://www.phonespell.org/combo.cgi?n=8294

And that therefore , anonymous long (tel) number have still less value than alphanumerical (tel) domain names, especially those including well known vanity shortcuts or being themselves vanity short numbers or short codes ?

Not sure to get your point.

With my last link I only wanted to give a little help for people thinking about what number they could register.

But yes, vanity numbers should have a value compared with phone numbers randomly delivered by phone companies.
Surely 26672696263 = COMPANYNAME is better than a random number.

Thanks for your explanation.
However in many countries, you cannot chose your phone number for land lines nor mobile phones, except if you pay high price for them.
There are two  notable exception categories where you can still choose a number , but then generally through renting it towards some service providers :
-  short codes with 4 to 5 digits for example, or
-  0-800 and 1-800 numbers, ideally those with some vanity shortcut in it,

Like the well known 8294 shortcode or vanity ID 8294 in long number , both for TAXI .
So TAXI companies worldwide might try to register their somehow mnemonic long number also typically including the TAXI vanity tag inside the long number chain.
They might do it if they are told about this, supposedly no one will educate them that in addition of renting an expensive vanity long number, they can register for a fraction of the price its dot TEL version and try to increase the sorting and ranking or their phone number in TAXI directories.

I mean neither the Registry nor the Registrars may be enough pushy too advertise or promote awareness of long numbers TEL registration in monthly newsletters , blogs or forums for TAXI operators to get some traction from real cases of their long numbers which include the meaningful 8294 vanity sequence, before the 15th of October ...

Possibly some of these long numbers might be squatted and handed for resale to the incumbant TAXI operators a few days after mid october.
Possibly some money there, with the condition to buy real existing TAXI numbers under pro TEL , and offer a real service to resale and transfer to the targetted thousands of local taxi companies through  transfering their IRL number registered under pro TEL (to lower cost of initial purchasing ) to TELnames, cashing in some price for resale & editing services to be paid,  and adding up some commission fee from Telnames for said transfer .

Considering the cost of renting a vanity long number per month , such long numbers with 8294 sequence included for TAXI might be valued with some interesting margin when transfering.
I just hope that such numbers are not going to be all purchased by a large stakeholder which will result in blocking immediately the potential usecase and turning its value to zero.
Better if several small operators buy , build up and transfer at smaller scale some 10 or 20 long numbers about taxis  in their geographical area ?
Local press could then spread the buzz on some sucessfull trasnsactions and help propagate pay back model, as free PR for the REGISTRY at same time ?

Telnic announces all-numeric long domain strings available from 15th October Empty Re: Telnic announces all-numeric long domain strings available from 15th October

Post by TELwax Mon Oct 07, 2013 9:06 pm

This is what we have until now as identified usecases for registration of long numbers , whatever their popularity to be, or any distinctive added value for the money  :
(please add some other realistic ones if there are still some )

So we have :

1. enterprise getting their hot line number to display through TEL more options to call their call center or other number on PABX or access to specific areas for Customer care on the enterprise website

2. not hyperbranded merchants but with nice easy-to-remember long number, willing to drag attention to other digital  assets or incumbant website

3. known (branded) merchants with some existing long number, willing to drag attention to their other main digital assets or their official website, their opening hours and coupons, in case their long number is already registered in many directories and yellow pages and on their fleet of vans.

4. cold call heavy campaigns specialist willing to get traffic back on the long number set for the campaign from lookup search originated by thousands of callees who did no respond but want to know who called

5. merchants and shops , after being offered coupons for a long number TEL , offered by Hibu or other YP companies to attract and lock customers in their online directories though longnumber dot TEL entry gift

6. mobile email anonymizer : register mobile number XXYYZZPPQQRR.TEL  for your number and tel your contacts on your voicemail or auto SMS responder, they might sent you an email at  telco1@ thismobilenumber dot TEL or telco2@ thismobilenumber dot TEL to drop you a message in a convenient manner, or to download you latest vCard

7. As your friends know your mobile number already , or as it is already registred on their mobile phone book, just TEL them on your voice mail or by SMS that now to get more related updated info about you, or your  , just need to search adding dot TEL to your number (to easily retrieve in mobile friendly format from their mobile, your FB account, your email, latest photos or phone number or address of that bar were we gather on Thursdays  nights, phone number of the tennis club where you can meet, etc). You may give them pw to access TELfriends zone attached to your number

8. Protect your expensive latest smartphone by registering its 15 to 16 digits unique ID number so called IMEI number as a TEL, to reduce possibilities for thieves to extract some money with your smartphone reselling on "second" hand markets ,as now its IMEI can be Googled by anyone before buying/reselling it, and encourage being returned back the soonest at contact details shown on the .TEL now attached to your smartphone through IMEI.

9. If you are a TAXI  do register under dot TEL your long phone number with the vanity tag 8294 in it, to get additionnal traffic to your booking website or to get your phone number rank better in wild search from Google for Taxi + location (to be explained how by Registry )

10. Florists, PIZZA, etc might also register their long number with vanity tag for PIZZA or FLOWER that they do rent at high monthly for years now, to build more internet visibility throught this vanity long number they have been paying fr msuch a long time, and get more online and mobile traffic and sale orders.

11. Promotion of so far unbranded proximity services :
BTL basic street marketing and informal street marketing of proximity services by individuals or smal businesses ( painter , gardening, massage, dog groomer, babby sitter etc ) promoting their phone number written on flyers pin on walls or message boards with detachable parts that you tear off for to keep the phone number to call later....

Printing on the flyer also a QRcode which directs to yournumber.tel ( to allow preliminary  discovery) , and printing  onto the detachable part of said papersheet to be picked-up,  the phonenumber .TEL along with the phone number itself, might show more chances to trigger mobile discovery and bookmarking of such easy retrievable proximity service/offer, instead of an anonymous ugly-mobile-phone-number-once-saw-but-could-not-retrieve-nor-check-more-info-or-without-engaging-into-unless-by-anonymous-voice-call-or-not-anonymous-SMS-query.

Therefore providing a basic mechanism from everyday technology (street flyers and papersheet on messages boards !) to increase chances to be get discovered and in touch with anyone  by their prefered mean of communication as :
a. Calling NOW the promoted phone number /service because it matches your urgent need
b. Discovering now or later their phonenumber .tel from their mobile on the go, which dot TEL has all the different contact methods on it plus basic presentation of service, and can be mobile bookmarked by user for more convenient later use.

WHAT ELSE  ?
